Police: 100-year-old driver hits 11 near LA school

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The screams of women and children didn't cause a 100-year-old driver to stop as he backed his large powder blue Cadillac onto a sidewalk across from an elementary school and hit 11 people, including nine children.

So people began pounding on his windows screaming for him to stop, a witness said.

Alma Solache said she was buying her children an afterschool snack Wednesday just before the accident outside a South Los Angeles school.

"He was not paying attention," said Solache, 24, adding that it was at least two or three seconds before the vehicle halted and people began pulling children out from beneath the car.

Four of the children were in critical condition when firefighters arrived but they were stabilized and were in serious condition at a hospital, city fire Capt. Jaime Moore said. Everyone was expected to survive, he said.

Children's backpacks, shoes, candy and loose change were strewn about the scene behind a discount grocery store across from Main Street Elementary.

Police said the driver, Preston Carter, was being very cooperative and drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash.

Carter talked to television reporters after the crash some five miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. He said he has a driver's license and will be 101 years old Sept. 5.

"My brakes failed. It was out of control," Carter told KCAL-TV.

Asked about hitting the children, Preston said: "You know I'm sorry about that. I wouldn't do that for nothing on earth. My sympathies for them."

Carter was pulling out of the grocery store parking lot, but instead of backing into the street, he backed onto the sidewalk, police Capt. George Rodriguez said.

"I think it was a miscalculation on his part. The gentleman is elderly," Rodriguez said. "Obviously he is going to have some impairment on his decision making."

Elderly drivers have been involved in other tragedies. In 2003, an 86-year-old man mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal of his car instead of the brake and then panicked, plowing into an open-air market in Santa Monica. Ten people were killed and 63 injured.

According to California's Department of Motor Vehicles, people over age 70 must renew their driver's license in person, rather than via the Internet or by mail. Older drivers can also be required to take a supplemental driving test if they fail a vision exam, or if a police officer, a physician, or a family member raises questions about their ability to drive.

Rodriguez said the collision was being investigated as an accident, and Carter was not under arrest. He has a valid driver's license, Rodriguez said.

Goodell: NFL seeks long-term improvement with refs

NEW YORK (AP) ? NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says possibly using replacement referees for regular-season games is worthwhile to ensure long-term improvements to officiating.

The league and the NFL Referees Association have yet to reach an agreement, and Goodell acknowledged Thursday that time was running out to make the regular officials available for the openers.

"We're anxious to get a deal done, but it has to get done that it's going to help us for the long term," Goodell said at a fantasy football event in Times Square. "It's not a short-term issue."

Of the replacement refs who have been calling preseason games, Goodell said: "We think they'll do a very credible job."

Officials probably need a week to 10 days to prepare for the season, Goodell said, and the first game is Sept. 5, 13 days away. The first full Sunday of games is Sept. 9.

NFLRA lead negotiator Mike Arnold said Thursday that officials have been training on their own during the lockout and would need less than a week to prep.

"We're ready to go," he said.

While the NFL and officials disagree on some financial matters, Goodell also characterized the differences as "philosophical." The NFL's proposal includes making some refs full-time ? currently all game officials work part-time with outside jobs ? and adding more crews.

Arnold said that the union was open to discussing such issues but any proposal to increase the number of officials while decreasing the pay for current refs was not viable.

Increasing the pool of officials would allow the league to replace individual officials or entire crews that are not performing well, Goodell said.

"Then it's based on performance, which is what fans all want, players all want, coaches all want," he said.

The replacement officials have been closely scrutinized during the preseason, with any error quickly pointed out by media and fans.

"It's not our job to judge the replacements, because their performance speaks for itself," Arnold said.

Goodell said he wasn't concerned that teams and fans would question the credibility of results if that inevitable first disputed call of the season takes place while replacement officials are on the field.

"We have controversial calls. Officiating is an imperfect science," he said. "They're not going to be correct all the time, but we have systems in place to try to help. We have instant replay, as an example, to try to help correct those mistakes. ... It's like any game. We get calls every Monday from fans, from coaches, from teams upset about a particular call. That happens. And it will happen going forward regardless of who's on the field."

The next generation iPhone is expected to be launched in just over a month and the leaks for this upcoming handset are happening aplenty. The latest component from the next generation iPhone that has been snapped is the battery and though most people expected the battery of the iPhone 5 to have a significant improvement over the one used on the iPhone 4S, it appears that this is not the case. A report by 9to5Mac has stated the next iPhone will feature a 1440mAh battery, up by 10mAh from the one used in the iPhone 4S.

The report states, ?A reliable parts source sent us images of new iPhone battery packs that they received. Notably, these new battery packs sport a higher capacity than the packs in previous generations of Apple?s smartphone. This new battery features a capacity of 1440 mAh. That is up from the capacity of 1430 mAh on the iPhone 4S and up from 1420 mAh on the iPhone 4, according to iPhone repair shop iFixYouri, whom examined the battery photos.?

Elaborating on the battery, the report also states that the voltage of the battery has also been increased to 3.8 and it has been raised from 3.7 which is found on both, the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. The report also goes on to state, ?The new battery also has an increased watts-per-hour measurement (wHr), 5.45 wHr, which is an increase from 5.25 and 5.3 on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, respectively. This is a proportional increase due to the increase from 1430 to 1440 mAh.?

The next iPhone is highly expected to feature LTE connectivity and hence, a larger battery is believed to be used with it. If rumours of LTE are true and these batteries are in fact for the iPhone 5, then it can be possible that these batteries can be capable of handling LTE connectivity.

There are other points of interest also surrounding the upcoming flagship smartphone from Apple and two rumours of the iPhone 5 seem to be consistent for quite a while now. One is that the iPhone 5 will have a redesigned casing with a larger display, and the other is that it will feature a micro dock. The next iPhone is expected to feature a major design overhaul and is said to be much bigger, measuring 58.47 mm wide, 123.83 mm high and 7.6 mm thin with a 4-inch display. As previous reports have indicated, the headphone jack will also be relocated from the top of the iPhone to its bottom. Earlier reports also indicated that the size of the dock has been reduced drastically, and it is now the size of a micro USB. The screen size of the iPhone has remained the same since it was first launched. Apple is expected to increase the size of the display to 4-inches diagonally. While the width will not change, the brand will raise the height, thereby giving it a resolution of 1136 x 640.

LONDON (AP) ? The closing ceremony of the Olympics will be a global party, with a distinctively British flavor. Organizers say it will be "a celebration of all that's good about London, British people, our music and our culture."

Here's a guide to some of the key elements:

FROM ELGAR TO ADELE

Organizers say the ceremony will be a celebration of British music "from Elgar to Adele." Many viewers will have heard of Adele, the big-voiced singer who won six Grammys with her album "21." Edward Elgar was the composer of the "Pomp and Circumstance" marches and the "Enigma Variations." His composition "Nimrod," regarded as quintessentially English, was played at the opening ceremony of the London Games ? one of several elements linking the first night of the Olympics with the last.

From there, the ceremony explodes in a kaleidoscope of musicians and eras ? from 1960s Mods with The Who, to the 1990s "girl power" of the Spice Girls.

A WAY WITH WORDS

The ceremony will pay tribute to Britain's rich literary heritage, with a montage of newspaper headlines that turn out to be lines from a millennium of classics, from the Anglo-Saxon ballad "Beowulf" to works by Geoffrey Chaucer, William Wordsworth, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens ? and of course William Shakespeare. Lines from his play "The Tempest" ? "Be not afeard: The isle is full of noises" ? inspired director Danny Boyle's opening ceremony. Expect them to echo again here.

A FLAIR FOR FASHION

Visually, the show will celebrate British verve in art and design, from world-famous fashion designers like Vivienne Westwood ? and supermodels such as Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell ? to Brit-art icons such as Damien Hirst. A country where the sky and the architecture are both often gray loves a riot of color, so expect surreal and psychedelic visuals.

COME DANCING

Who says Britain doesn't have rhythm? Among the 4,000 performers in the closing ceremony are acrobats and gymnasts, ballet dancers, Bhangra performers and even a spot of Morris dancing ? a traditional but much-ridiculed English folk dance performed by groups in bell-fringed white costumes.

COMEDY CLASSICS

British humor has a big role in the closing ceremony, with an appearance by Eric Idle of iconoclastic comedy troupe Monty Python's Flying Circus. Expect surreal visual juxtapositions as he sings "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," the jaunty but sardonic ditty from the film "Monty Python's Life of Brian."

There is also a tribute to the much-loved sitcom "Only Fools and Horses," whose central character, Del Boy Trotter, has become an iconic Londoner. He's an irrepressible Cockney market trader bustling around in his battered, three-wheeled Robin Reliant but always just one dodgy deal away from striking it rich.

Credit Unions ? A Friendly Alternative To High-Street Finance

If you are looking to borrow some money to pay for a dream holiday, buy a car or make some improvements to your house, it?s likely that your first port of call in looking for finance will be your bank. After all, you already trust them to look after your money and their current loan rates are good so why go anywhere else?

While it?s certainly convenient to approach the bank for a loan, the process of applying for finance can be a rocky road and, at the end of it all, you might find that your income isn?t enough to finance the repayments. Similarly, if you?ve had credit problems in the past it?s highly likely that you?ll be forced into punitive interest rates or having your application turned down together. If this happens, you might then try your luck with one of the multitude of loan companies who advertise on television and in the press, or found on the internet. However, there is another option that many people don?t know exists: the local credit union.

Credit Unions are financial co-operatives owned and controlled by their members. They generally operate in areas where low incomes are common and offer savings and great value loans to customers. Another benefit of Credit Unions is they are local, ethical and know what their members want. Each Credit Union has a ?common bond? which determines who can join. This bond may be for people who live or work in a particular area, work for the same employer or belong to the same association or club, such as a church or trade union.

Credit Unions work by having members pool their savings together, which can then provide a fund from which loans are made to other members. Borrowers then pay interest on the money loaned to them as they would if the loan had been through a bank. As the money in the fund belongs to individuals, the credit union ?rents? the funds from its savers, who each year receive a dividend from the money they rent to the credit union. As a result, credit unions should offer its savers a good return on the money that is placed in the fund.

In order to operate, a credit union must be successful in attracting a sufficiently large amount of savers to enable it to hold sufficient liquidity to enable it to meet members? requests for loans, share withdrawals and overheads. Furthermore, dividend payments to savers and the credit union?s operating costs have to be met out of the credit union?s profits, so a strong fund is essential for the credit union?s success. As the main source of income for a credit union comes from the interest charged on members? loans, it is very important that the credit union be proactive in marketing the benefits and availability of their services.

For peace of mind, credit unions have to be registered and regulated by the Financial Services Authority, who also regulates banks, building societies and all other providers of financial services in Britain. Furthermore saving members of credit unions are protected by the Financial Services and Compensation Scheme (FSCS), who provide a safety net for customers of financial firms in the event of the firm going out of business.

When looking for finance, it is normally good practice to shop around the various resources available to get the best deal on personal loans. For some, this will involve trawling the various banks on the High Street in search of a good rate, while others will turn to the internet and price comparison websites in order to find and compare loan rates. However, bear in mind that if you can?t find a deal to suit, or if the bank says ?no? it might be worthwhile having a chat with your local credit union ? they might say ?yes?.

Nuit #1?s opening 15 minutes consist of one long, graphic, passionate, erotic, and strikingly real sex scene. The couple is Nikola? (Dimitri Storoge) and Clara (Catherine de L?an). They have met at a club and have come back to Nikola??s apartment for what, we can assume, they both know will be a one night stand. The sex in director of Anne ?mond?s gut-punch of a debut is a kind of overture. After it, we get two long soliloquies divided by a brief interlude that shows the man and the woman on the street in the rain, standing and wrestling, after Clara flees apartment in the middle of the night. Finally, we get a coda, Clara, who is grade school teacher, listening to her students read a poem. Nuit #1 begins with bodies and ends with language. That alone tells you a lot of what ?mond is up to here: an extraction of the meaning of an encounter.

After Clara tries to leave Nikola??s apartment after he has fallen asleep, he chases her down, setting up his meandering musings on sex, life, and love. ?Modern life makes me sick,? he says. ?Modern love makes me sick. Modern women make me sick. It?s like they?re men.? This could all come tumbling out like pages from a teenager?s diary, but ?mond?s script is too good, lean and candid, honest but unafraid to mix in a poetic flair. This isn?t how people usually talk ? or at least not this much all at once ? but for all its dim and smoky apartment realism, Nuit #1 is a kind of fantasy, satisfying the longing for taking two magnetic, yet closed-off souls and cracking them open like eggs.

Both Storoge and Catherine de L?an are extraordinary, particular in their pacing of all the dialogue, which sets emotions in motion and allows them to ebb-and-flow. There?s tension in what?s at stake, nothing less than an understanding of the meaning and purpose of an?individual?in the world, but also in how honesty and misunderstand can prick the ego and the heart. Nikola? is a failed artist unable to apply himself in the menial jobs he is forced to take. Clara is a school teacher who spends her nights and weekends losing herself in drugs and music and sex. Both, we come to realize, share one thing: a disappointment with life.

?mond doesn?t lash out or condemn the sexual despair we are confronted with, nor does she demonize fetish or desire, as, say, Paul Schrader might. Rather, sex, even in its so-called pornographic details, comes across as astoundingly beautiful ? even more so when Nikola? walks back through with Clara exactly what they have done together, detail by detail, droplet of sweat by droplet of sweat. We are confronted here with a vision of modern life that has left us adrift, lonely and grasping for meaning. But the film itself provides a kind of hope, hope in the way art and language can soothe by making some sense out of all the noise.
