Govt plans 2,500MW from wind energy by end of 2015

ISLAMABAD - The Government is keen to commence wind farm projects in the country to meet some per centage of the national energy requirement through renewable energy technologies.
According to an official of Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB), wind energy is cost effective and can become a substitute to thermal power generation with investments from private sector. According to data available with Alternative Energy
Development Board (AEDB) and Pakistan Meteorological Department, preliminary site surveys carried out in late nineties and early years of this century indicated that coastal areas of Sindh and
Balochistan provinces and some northern areas possess adequate wind resources.
The official reports identify that in Sindh Province, district Thatta, Karachi, Hyderabad and Badin and in Balochistan Province, district Gwadar and Makran Coastal Belt possess prospective sites for development, installation and commissioning of wind farm projects.
The government plans to achieve up to 2,500MW from wind energy by the end of 2015. Wind energy is sustainable, clean, safe, economically competitive and creates jobs. The first energy wind power project in Pakistan started
working with a 50MW generation capacity in Jhimpir, Sindh in December 2012.
Pakistan?s Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) recently approved a New Park Energy Phase-I, 400MW wind project near Port Qasim.
Pakistan has the potential of producing approximately 150,000MW of wind energy, says a recent United States Agency for International Development (USAID) report. The wind projects can fetch an investment of around two billion dollars.? According to another study, Pakistan has identified cumulative potential to generate 3.2 million MW from renewable energy resources including 340,000MW from wind, 2.9 million MW from solar, 50,000MW from hydro (large), 3,100MW from hydro (small), 1,800MW from bagasses cogeneration and 500MW from waste.? A mean annual wind speed (at 10 m and 30 m above ground) of 18 kmph and 22 kmph respectively is considered as the minimum required for feasible generation of electricity.? Knowing the growing energy requirement of the country, and depleting energy resource within the country, the Government of Pakistan deems to diversify its energy mix so that dependency over imported fuel may be reduced and some per centages of power requirement may be met through indigenously available renewable energy technologies.
During wind mapping of coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan provinces, data from 20 wind monitoring stations have been collected and analyzed.
The data indicate that a wind corridor is available in the general area from Hyderabad to Kati Bandar having immense potential to generate electricity.
Developing wind power plants in Jhimpir, Gharo, Keti Bandar and Bin Qasim in Sindh, will not only reduce electricity shortages but will also ease burden of oil imports of $ 12 billion annually.? The bulk of this wind resource is derived from the energy of the great southwest monsoon system which blows over Pakistan from June to September.
This wind corridor extends up to Rajhistan Province (India) where several wind farm projects have been installed by Government of India.
The market analyses of wind turbine generators (WTGs) indicate that the manufacturing industry has developed commercial WTGs of 5 MW capacity.
The available wind potential demands that wind turbines of at least 750 kW capacity should be installed for power generation.? Wind farms will help in reducing environmental consequences due to reduction in dependency over fossil fuels for power generation.

The Ad Campaign: Catsimatidis Emphasizes Business Background ...

It is perhaps no surprise that the first mayoral candidate to begin running a costly television advertisement is the wealthy businessman John A. Catsimatidis, a Republican with a $3 billion fortune at his disposal. (His ad went up a few days before one for a Republican rival, Joseph J. Lhota, is to appear.) Eager to increase his name recognition and unhampered by spending limits because he is not participating in New York City?s voluntary public matching funds program, Mr. Catsimatidis commissioned this highly biographical 60-second ad, which will be shown on cable and broadcast television, from the Victory Group, which is based in Florida. The firm has worked with former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.

Click below to jump to a fact-check:

SCORECARD Mr. Catsimatidis is playing to his strengths: he has a compelling, Horatio Alger-style life story and his success in business has allowed him to donate generously to charitable causes. The ad does not mention his political experience, since he has little, although he has been a campaign donor to Bill Clinton and Mitt Romney. And the script is vague about his policy platform, but no more so than Mr. Catsimatidis himself, who has offered few specifics about his plans for the city beyond a return of the World?s Fair.

Writing A Business Book Is Good PR - SteamFeed

Doesn?t it feel like everyone is writing some sort of a book? You may feel annoyed by the echo chamber of book topics, left out because you haven?t gotten to the place where a book feels right, or energized to follow suit with a topic you?re jazzed about.

This range of emotion can be off-putting and hinder your business development efforts. But, let?s face it?writing a business book is good PR.

Whether you?re in business for yourself, an executive of a company, an academic, or an expert in a vertical market, you have experiences to share. If you?re a blogger, even better!

Bloggers with a few years under their belt have content to share. After all, writing ~400 words three times weekly for a few years should mean a book topic is floating to the surface. (Hint: Comb your archives to see which topic resonates more than others and then consider whether that topic is worthy for a how-to book.)

What usually gets in the way of publishing a book on any medium is confidence. Here?s a word of counsel?ignore the naysayers that bloggers who write books are not authors. Instead, think of what?s good for your business.

How do you market your products and services?? Would it be advantageous to have a book, how-to manual, e-book for free on the website, or e-book for sale online to market your business? Did you nod in agreement? Indeed.

One more time?writing a business book is good public relations for your company!? Here?s how:

  • You can promote the title via an optimized online news release that drives SEO juice to your website as well as sales.
  • You can promote the news you?re a new author on all the social media channels.
  • You?re likely to find your invitations to guest post or to speak at tradeshows increase.
  • You can promote the book on your blog as content for a series about what?s in the book.
  • You can share ordering information as a call to action in the sidebar which takes you to a landing page and newsletter sign up in your marketing funnel. That?s digital marketing.

The benefits of writing a business book are many:

  • You power up your brand. I know this to be true; I?m a blogger who has written a book, and the initial reaction is ?Wow, you?re a published author!?
  • You infuse new energy into content marketing.
  • You begin to think like an author and search for topics suitable for book content.
  • You join a select few who either self-publish or get published the traditional way who take the time to experience authorship.
  • Your influence measurably improves with regard from within your community and beyond.
  • It?s a springboard to integrated marketing and public relations opportunities.

The actual experience of the experience is most worthwhile. When you finally understand how to get a book to market utilizing the treasures of self-publishing, that experience is golden. For the earliest pioneers in the self-publishing realm, the technology should only become easier. Do yourself a favor?power up your creativity and craft a new title to launch online; it does wonders to infuse your soul, too!

Wal-Mart's 1Q profit, sales disappoint

(AP) ? Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s first quarter profit rose 1.1 percent as the world's largest retailer struggled with a sales slump in its namesake business.

The company, based in Bentonville, Ark., blamed a payroll tax increase, delayed tax refunds and bad weather for the profit and sales results that missed Wall Street expectations.

The company also offered a profit outlook that came below analysts' projections. Wal-Mart's stock fell $1.76, or 2.2 percent, to $78.10 in premarket trading.

Wal-Mart said Thursday that it earned $3.78 billion, or $1.14 per share in the quarter ended April 30. That compared with $3.74 billion, or $1.09 per share, a year earlier.

Sales rose 1 percent to $113.43 billion. That figure excludes Sam's Club membership fees.

The results fell short of Wall Street expectations for earnings of $1.15 per share on revenue of $115.78 billion.

Wal-Mart reported a 1.4 percent drop in revenue at stores open at least a year at its namesake business, its first drop in a year and a half. At Sam's Club, the figure rose a slim 0.2 percent, held down by less traffic from business customers, bad weather and lower-than-expected inflation.

Revenue at stores open at least a year is considered a key measurement for retailers because it excludes the effect of stores that open or close during the year.

GOP demands more despite Benghazi email release

(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)

(AP) ? The White House release of some 100 pages of emails and notes about the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, last year has failed to satisfy congressional Republicans, who are demanding more information.

"Why not release all of the unclassified documents?" said Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. "The president has repeatedly said that when he gets new information, he'll release it to the public. Why not release ? instead of the hand-picked ones ? why not release all the unclassified documents?"

A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Wednesday Republicans hoped "this limited release of documents is a sign of more cooperation to come," while the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee pressed the Pentagon for more details about military orders around the time of the attack and what military aircraft were in the region.

Four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, were killed when militants struck the U.S. mission and CIA annex in twin nighttime attacks on Sept. 11, 2012.

Republicans have accused the Obama administration of misleading the American people about the circumstances of the attack, playing down a terrorist strike that would reflect poorly on President Barack Obama in the heat of a presidential race. Obama has dismissed charges of a cover-up and suggested on Monday that the criticism was politically motivated.

Eight months after the attack, the issue remains a political winner with the Republican base as conservatives have been ferocious in assailing Obama. Rank-and-file GOP members and outside groups have pressured Boehner to appoint a special select committee to investigate. Instead, Republicans on five House committees are pursuing their own inquiries and promising to call more witnesses to testify publicly, including the veteran diplomat and retired admiral who led an independent review of the attack that widely criticized the State Department's insufficient security at the facility.

The emails disclosed on Wednesday underscored the turf battle between the State Department and CIA, as neither one wanted to take the blame for the attack. They also showed the reluctance within the administration about saying anything definitively as officials scrambled to write talking points for lawmakers and U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, who discussed the attack on Sunday talk shows.

Rice's widely debunked remarks that cited protests over an anti-Islam video as the cause of the attack fueled the criticism of the administration and later cost her a chance at becoming secretary of state.

According to the 99 pages of emails, then CIA-Director David Petraeus objected to the final talking points because he wanted to see more details revealed to the public.

Petraeus' deputy, Mike Morell, after a meeting at the White House on Saturday, Sept. 15, scratched out from the CIA's early talking point drafts mentions of al-Qaida, the experience of fighters in Libya, Islamic extremists and a warning to the Cairo embassy on the eve of the attacks of calls for a demonstration and break-in by jihadists.

Petraeus apparently was displeased by the removal of so much of the material his analysts had proposed for release. The talking points were sent to Rice to prepare her for an appearance on news shows on Sunday, Sept. 16, and also to members of the House Intelligence Committee.

"No mention of the cable to Cairo, either?" Petraeus wrote after receiving Morell's edited version, developed after an intense back-and-forth among Obama administration officials. "Frankly, I'd just as soon not use this, then."

The emails were partially blacked out, including removal of names of senders and recipients who are career employees at the CIA and elsewhere.

The emails show only minor edits were requested by the White House, and most of the objections came from the State Department. "The White House cleared quickly, but State has major concerns," read an email that a CIA official sent to Petraeus on Friday, Sept. 14.

Critics have highlighted an email by then-State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland that expressed concern that any mention of prior warnings or the involvement of al-Qaida would give congressional Republicans ammunition to attack the administration in the weeks before the presidential election.

That email was among those released by the White House, sent by Nuland on Sept. 14 at 7:39 p.m. to officials in the White House, State Department and CIA. She wrote she was concerned they could prejudice the investigation and be "abused by members to beat the State Department for not paying attention to agency warnings so why do we want to feed that either? Concerned."

After Nuland sent several more emails throughout that Friday evening expressing further concerns, Jake Sullivan, then-deputy chief of staff at the State Department, said the issues would be worked out at a meeting at the White House on Saturday morning.

A senior U.S. intelligence official told reporters Wednesday that Morell made the changes to the talking points after that meeting because of his own concerns that they could prejudge an FBI investigation into who was responsible for the attacks.

The official said Morell also didn't think it was fair to disclose the CIA's advance warning without giving the State Department a chance to explain how it responded. The official spoke on a condition of anonymity without authorization to speak about the emails on the record. Petraeus declined to be interviewed Wednesday.

The intelligence official said Morell was aware of Nuland's objections but did not make the changes under pressure from the State Department but because he independently shared the concerns.

That is contradicted in an email sent to Rice on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1:23 p.m. by a member of her staff whose name was blacked out. The email said Morell indicated he would work with Sullivan and Ben Rhodes, the White House deputy national security adviser, to revise the talking points. The intelligence official disputed that assertion and insisted Morell acted alone.

An email from Morell also says he spoke to Petraeus "about State's deep concerns about mentioning the warnings and the other work done on this."

The White House released the full set of emails sent to Congress under the pressure in hopes of putting an end to the controversy that has dogged the administration for months. White House spokesman Eric Schultz said Wednesday that "these emails have been selectively and inaccurately read out to the media."

At a Capitol Hill hearing Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder said there has been "very, very substantial progress" in the investigation into who was responsible for the attacks in Benghazi. Earlier this month, the FBI said it was seeking information on three people who were on the grounds of the diplomatic mission when it was attacked.

Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, who sits on the Intelligence Committee, said of the emails, "I didn't find anything that looked like a smoking gun in terms of political cooking of the talking points. There is very little input from the White House."

But. he said: "There are some things to criticize in here. The State Department looks like it is trying to avoid blame."

Human skin cells converted into embryonic stem cells: First time human stem cells have been produced via nuclear transfer

May 15, 2013 ? Scientists at Oregon Health & Science University and the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) have successfully reprogrammed human skin cells to become embryonic stem cells capable of transforming into any other cell type in the body. It is believed that stem cell therapies hold the promise of replacing cells damaged through injury or illness. Diseases or conditions that might be treated through stem cell therapy include Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, cardiac disease and spinal cord injuries.

The research breakthrough, led by Shoukhrat Mitalipov, Ph.D., a senior scientist at ONPRC, follows previous success in transforming monkey skin cells into embryonic stem cells in 2007. This latest research will be published in the journal Cell online May 15 and in print June 6.

The technique used by Drs. Mitalipov, Paula Amato, M.D., and their colleagues in OHSU's Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, is a variation of a commonly used method called somatic cell nuclear transfer, or SCNT. It involves transplanting the nucleus of one cell, containing an individual's DNA, into an egg cell that has had its genetic material removed. The unfertilized egg cell then develops and eventually produces stem cells.

"A thorough examination of the stem cells derived through this technique demonstrated their ability to convert just like normal embryonic stem cells, into several different cell types, including nerve cells, liver cells and heart cells. Furthermore, because these reprogrammed cells can be generated with nuclear genetic material from a patient, there is no concern of transplant rejection," explained Dr. Mitalipov. "While there is much work to be done in developing safe and effective stem cell treatments, we believe this is a significant step forward in developing the cells that could be used in regenerative medicine."

Another noteworthy aspect of this research is that it does not involve the use of fertilized embryos, a topic that has been the source of a significant ethical debate.

The Mitalipov team's success in reprogramming human skin cells came through a series of studies in both human and monkey cells. Previous unsuccessful attempts by several labs showed that human egg cells appear to be more fragile than eggs from other species. Therefore, known reprogramming methods stalled before stem cells were produced.

To solve this problem, the OHSU group studied various alternative approaches first developed in monkey cells and then applied to human cells. Through moving findings between monkey cells and human cells, the researchers were able to develop a successful method.

The key to this success was finding a way to prompt egg cells to stay in a state called "metaphase" during the nuclear transfer process. Metaphase is a stage in the cell's natural division process (meiosis) when genetic material aligns in the middle of the cell before the cell divides. The research team found that chemically maintaining metaphase throughout the transfer process prevented the process from stalling and allowed the cells to develop and produce stem cells.

"This is a remarkable accomplishment by the Mitalipov lab that will fuel the development of stem cell therapies to combat several diseases and conditions for which there are currently no treatments or cures," said Dr. Dan Dorsa, Ph.D., OHSU Vice President for Research. "The achievement also highlights OHSU's deep reproductive expertise across our campuses. A key component to this success was the translation of basic science findings at the OHSU primate center paired with privately funded human cell studies."

One important distinction is that while the method might be considered a technique for cloning stem cells, commonly called therapeutic cloning, the same method would not likely be successful in producing human clones otherwise known as reproductive cloning. Several years of monkey studies that utilize somatic cell nuclear transfer have never successfully produced monkey clones. It is expected that this is also the case with humans. Furthermore, the comparative fragility of human cells as noted during this study, is a significant factor that would likely prevent the development of clones.

"Our research is directed toward generating stem cells for use in future treatments to combat disease," added Dr. Mitalipov. "While nuclear transfer breakthroughs often lead to a public discussion about the ethics of human cloning, this is not our focus, nor do we believe our findings might be used by others to advance the possibility of human reproductive cloning."
